A 22-megawatt solar power project in Negros Occidental is set to start commercial operations next month, becoming the first major solar facility to provide electricity to the power grid, company executives said Thursday.

The power plant, built by San Carlos Solar Energy Inc., will initially offer 13 MW to the power grid at feed-in tariff rates. The second phase of the project covering 9 MW is set to start commercial operations in June.

SaCaSol is a renewable energy company established by Bronzeoak Philippines and European fund manager ThomasLloyd Group.  Bronzeoak Philippines was a venture between Bronzeoak Ltd. of the United Kingdom and Zabaleta & Co.

“One key factor that was our edge over the others is the commitment from our partners. Our funding [from partner ThomasLLoyd Group] made the ball rolling,” Bronzeoak Philippines Inc. project manager Anabele Natividad told reporters.

The company started construction of the project in August 2013.

Natividad said officials from the Energy Department had conducted site inspection on the status of the plant’s physical construction and the company was only waiting for the final go signal from the Energy Regulatory Commission.

“We are incredibly excited to complete and open this wonderful solar plant which will add great value to the country’s renewable energy objectives,” SaCaSol president Jose Maria Zabaleta Jr. said.

The Board of Investments granted tax incentives to SaCaSol’s 22-MW solar power project located at a 35-hectare site in the San Carlos Economic Zone in January.

The P1.9-billion project shall enjoy a seven-year income tax holiday and duty-free importation of renewable energy machinery, equipment and materials including communication equipment within the first 10 years.

SaCasol’s project is expected to provide approximately 31,610,473 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to the Visayas Grid which is suffering from brownouts and low voltage problems.

SaCasol tapped Germany-based Conergy AG as supplier of 22 solar power inverters and 88,000 photovoltaic modules that will be used for the plant.
